Dear Parent/Guardian, 

We’re so excited that your son/daughter is interested in being a part of our Doxa Journey team. This team will be comprised of students from the Scarborough community and leaders form Youth Unlimited. Growing up in the Scarborough Area I (Melissa Morrissey) was very involved in youth activities and service projects. In fact, the experiences I had serving overseas and in my own neighbourhood as a young person helped shape the person I am today and prepare me for my role as a social service worker with Toronto Youth Unlimited. I trust that this experience will be equally as impacting for your son/daughter as we look into some of the pressing needs of our communities as well as communities around the world, and seek to respond as compassionate young people.

Our director at Doxa (a network of youth organizations in Scarborough), Calvin Russell is also a part of many Doxa Journey. He has over 11 years experience as a youth worker in Scarborough. Together Calvin and I have led 10 service projects to the Dominican Republic and other Latin American countries since 2000. We have a variety of experienced and passionate youth leaders that also help to lead these teams!

Youth Unlimited is a non-profit youth organization with over 50 staff who work in various projects throughout the GTA. Some of these projects include sports programs, tutoring programs, teen moms groups, anti-violence programs, and more. Doxa Journey is just one more example of a Youth Unlimited program designed to support and empower the youth people of Toronto.

Over the next five months this team will be involved in a variety of community service opportunities as well as workshops designed to help us dialogue on issues such as poverty, injustice, community development, teamwork, servanthood, and co-operation. Eventually we will travel overseas together in order to be a resource and help to a group of people we have known personally for the last nine years.

Please read through the application, as it will give some more information to help you make this decision with your son/daughter. If they do join this journey they will receive a Team Handbook, which will answer many questions and alert you to important preparations your son/daughter will need to make (i.e. Passports, Immunizations, Travel Health Insurance etc). We will be holding an initial parents info session, be sure to find out the date of that meeting from your son or daughter.
